Reinosa: A Hidden Gem in Northern Spain

If you are thinking of traveling to the north of Spain, we recommend exploring Reinosa, a lesser-known destination in Cantabria that is equally beautiful and interesting. The best way to discover this town rich in history and culture is by wandering through its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and charming squares. Admire impressive buildings dating back to the 16th and 18th centuries, showcasing traditional mountain architecture that is well-preserved. Don’t miss the Plaza de España with its Town Hall, a fine example of civil architecture in the region, as well as other notable stone buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Another must-see is the magnificent Church of San Sebastián, a baroque gem built in the 16th century on the remains of a Romanesque chapel, known for its facade and tower.

The Ebro Reservoir

Just a few kilometers from Reinosa lies the Ebro Reservoir, surrounded by a beautiful natural environment where you can enjoy activities such as fishing, canoeing, and hiking along its shores. The breathtaking landscape of the reservoir and the surrounding mountains is a sight to behold, especially at sunset.

Hiking in the Saja-Besaya Natural Park

The Ebro Reservoir is not the only natural area nearby. Just 22 kilometers from Reinosa, the Saja-Besaya Natural Park offers a perfect setting to recharge and immerse yourself in nature. Put on your hiking boots and explore this vast protected area, filled with oak and beech forests and a rich wildlife population. The park features numerous trails where you can spot deer, roe deer, foxes, and wild boars in their natural habitat, and if you’re lucky, you might even see bears.

Campurrian Gastronomy

Traveling to Cantabria is synonymous with eating well, so don’t miss the opportunity to savor traditional dishes from this northern cuisine, such as ”torreznos” or ”cocido montañés,” a hearty stew made with white beans. Indulge in desserts like ”leche frita” or the popular ”pantortillas,” a sweet pastry that will sweeten your visit to the capital of Campoo and can also be enjoyed in the bustling area of the arcades.
